I get what Pope Francis is saying, but if I were in his shoes, I would have pointed my attention to the aggressor, not the victim. It’s not like his words will affect what Putin and Zelenskyy do. Pope Francis knows this, so this is an exercise in theory. So, point your criticism at the one who started this whole mess.

The problem with this perspective is that the US, the largest country, provoked this War. And they are the ones that are directing the refusal of negotiations and watching while Ukraine and its people get destroyed.
The problem is that a sober assessment of the situation is that Ukraine is in big trouble. Ukraine is now rounding up people that don't want to fight, and sticking them in the meat grinder in the front lines with 3 weeks training. There is no hope for Ukraine to "win" and repel Russia from the East and Crimea because they are at a massive troop/population disadvantage. Negotiating a settlement now, before their position weakens further will save many Ukrainian lives and square kilometers of territory. People are dying for nothing.
